Farm living is the life for me

Johnny and I have quietly been browsing real estate for the last few months, hunting for a place where the horses can live with us. I couldn’t sell him on 80 acres in the middle of nowhere that would allow me to realize my cross-country course fantasies, but we did find a compromise.

This mini farm sits on just under 7 acres and includes a house, a large pasture, a 4 stall barn with a tack room, wash stall and bathroom, a paddock, a shop, and a 3-sided storage shed for hay and equipment.

The best part of all is that this place is literallyΒ right next door to the barn! I’ll be able toΒ use the barn’s arenas while still having Moe and Gina (and any future horses) at home.

There are some other perks, too. It’s closer to Tulsa than our current house. Johnny’s commute will stay about the same. My commute will increase to about 45 minutes each way, but I’ve been approved to work from home a few days a week. The house also has enormous closets and bathrooms, which makes me want to weep with joy. Oh yeah, and it has this pool:


We’re unlikely to move in before fall, as we have a lot of packing to do in our current house (not to mention a master bathroom to finish remodeling) and want to make some changes to the new house before moving (mostly cosmetic things like painting).

I’m super excited, though! It’s been years since I lived with my horses, and I can’t wait to see them every day.

  1. That’s going to be so great! And since you won’t be commuting to the barn at all any more, maybe that balances out the work commute? That place is so cute, and it looks like all of the horse stuff (barn, fences, etc.) is in great shape.

    1. Not driving to the barn will certainly help the work commute! The barn commute really gets me any time I need to travel somewhere with the horse; I have to budget time to drive to the barn to get the trailer and the horse (45 minute drive + 10 minutes to hook up + 5 minutes to load horse), then whatever time it will take to get to my destination. And then I have to figure in time to drop off the trailer and horse and drive back home!

    1. IT COULD BE!! But who are we kidding, Gina’s gonna knock the fence over and have that baby in the middle of the street, because that’s how she is. *sigh*

    An acreage is the dream for my SO and I too, but we’re many years away from affording it at this point. Even just enough land and a halfway decent house is a tall order, so the fact that you were able to get a place with the land, a nice house, the pool, good fencing and a barn (and a nice one!) is so cool. I’m fighting off the jealousy πŸ˜‰

    1. The cost of living here in Oklahoma is very low compared to many other parts of the United States, which means acreage is fairly attainable. Obviously, it depends on where you want to live- if you move way the hell out to the middle of nowhere (let’s say somewhere that’s ~60 miles north of Tulsa, the region’s largest city), land goes as cheap as $2000 USD/acre. In more desirable areas that are closer to the city, prices average about $10,000 USD/acre. That’s still cheap compared to other areas of the country based on my limited observations of real estate in regions I would rather live in.

      The state compensates for its low land prices by actively trying to kill its residents through near-daily earthquakes, blazing heat, occasional ice storms, and regular tornadoes. πŸ˜›

      1. Wow. I cried a little over this (ok, alot). We bought a small acreage 30-40 minutes from the city, 70’s home with sketchy wiring, cute little barn with nothing in it and some old falling down fencing. It works out to over $100,000/acre…… Even if you take out the value of the home based on city prices (which are insane in their own rights) it’s in the $50,000/acre range….

        My company does have it’s HQ in Tulsa….

        1. It seems like all of Canada is terribly expensive! Land here in the Tulsa area is plentiful and cheap, especially if you’re okay with commuting an hour or so into the city. It’s fairly easy to find things between 5-10 acres or very large farms (40+ acres), but difficult to find the sweet spot of 15-20 acres! I would prefer this house had another 5 acres to go with it, but it ought to be perfectly fine.

          Come to Tulsa! The Mexican food is pretty good, as is the barbecue! And you haven’t lived until you’ve been inside a QuikTrip gas station or visited the Blue Whale of Route 66. πŸ˜›

    1. I would prefer to have 80 acres complete with indoor arena, outdoor arena, hay meadow, cross-country field, and excellent barn, but I haven’t won the lottery yet… :'(

    1. Thank you! It’s really nice- much nicer than I was excepting to end up with! (Interior wood paneling is a VERY popular option here in OK, ugh.)

  4. Congratulations. That’s like the perfect arrangement: your own place with access to a bigger barn’s arenas and trainers. So jealous.

    1. It’s a great arrangement- it’s so nice to know that if I go on vacation, it will be really easy to find someone to feed the animals for me. (And vice versa- when barn owner go to Florida for part of the winter, I can help her out!)

        1. I’m to sell Johnny on Theoretical Fourth Horse (this is assuming Gina is pregnant and will foal as planned), but he is like “We can’t afford another horse!” (Who needs groceries? Not me. I need something to hunt on this season.)

    How cool. A pool like that AND horses in your backyard. That is my dream–the horse part. I have a pool but the heater is broken and I barely ever go in (but it’s great for our Golden Retriever!). Very, very nice.
