Friday Five

Happy Friday, y’all! This has been a hectic week for me, and I’m looking forward to taking most of next week off to rest and recharge. Tonight, the local dressage club is holding their annual Christmas party at the store- I’m eager to see lots of friends before having a quiet holiday at home.

Here’s what’s on my radar this week:

ONE // Winter Solstice

Today is the shortest day of the year! Days will only get longer from here, and I’m excited. I can’t wait to leave my headlamp inside when I go feed in the evening!

TWO // Happy Holidays from UT Martin

My alma mater put together this homage to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and it’s pretty great.

THREE // The Slow Death of Dressage: The Horse Show Entry fromĀ Dressage Today

A dressage friend shared this on Facebook and it garnered a big response from other members of our local dressage community. The author makes some good points here- the amount of memberships required for rated shows is staggering and confusing, the paperwork required for “separate show” weekends is annoying, and the costs of showing are high. While I haven’t competed at a rated dressage show, I’ve been very involved in organizing and running them. I can’t speak to the membership requirements and paperwork, but I can say that one reason your show fees are high is because it’s expensive to put on a show. Back in 2016, I broke down how much it cost my local GMO to put on a two day rated show (spoiler alert: a lot).

FOUR // Winter Woes: Owning Horses vs. Riding Horses from Practical Horseman

This article hit close to home! There are days I get up, intend to ride, and promptly get derailed by mucking stalls, spraying for weeds, re-organizing the tack room, etc. I love having my horses at home, and I’m lucky to be right next door to a facility with arenas, but I definitely don’t ride more often because the horses live at my house! It’s totally worth seeing them every day, though.

FIVE // 8 Things to Achieve Out Hunting from Horse & Hound

Hunting season is here! This list is a nice compilation of doable hunting goals; I’m still pretty bad at telling one hound from the other and could always read more books!

What are you up this weekend? Do you have big plans for Christmas?
